Tidewater 2019 was Terrific From the record-setting crowd to the warm, windy fun, this year’s Tidewater Family Weekend was memorable in every way. We stayed at the Southeast 4-H Conference Center in Wakefield, VA, with beautiful lakeside views as far as the eye could see. Families checked in on Friday night and soon enjoyed get-acquainted activities courtesy of State 4-H Director Jeremy Johnson, who led introductory games using webbing from the challenge course. Soon afterward, our weary travelers nodded off to the sound of the spring peepers surrounding Airfield Pond. Saturday morning started bright and early with a breakfast [...]
BRASS Weekend 2019, held March 8-10 at the Outdoor Learning Center at Horizons – Valley Pike in Harrisonburg, included an afternoon painting project that elicited some amazing artwork (scroll down for photos). Siblings had the chance to express themselves and enjoy the spotlight for a change, something that doesn’t always happen in their experience. BRASS Weekend, which hosted 110 people, also featured traditional camp activities like sports (lots of them), crafts and woodworking, and games. We also included a karaoke contest, a dance, and other music-themed fun in anticipation of BRASS Camp in late July (see below). This year’s edition [...]
January 18-22, 2019 Canaan Valley Resort Davis, WV Ski Family Weekend was amazing, even with temps varying by 40 degrees during the 4-day Martin Luther King weekend. It was an amazing getaway for families with a child under 18 who’s on treatment or within 3 years of treatment, as well as bereaved families. It was a non-typical camp at the beautiful Canaan Valley Resort in Davis, WV, where skied, snowboarded, tubed, and ice-skated. A few folks even found time to snowshoe around the trails of the resort. So far, 2019 has been a year for changes here at Special Love, [...]

One of camp's most bittersweet moments is the time when we have to say goodbye to a camper who's passed out of eligability. In order to make room for new campers facing the challenges and hardship of a new diagnosis we must turn away old friends who've finished their treatment and gone three years without relapse or recurrance. We hate to see them leave but are glad to know that they can go. Eligable to attend or not, however, they will aways be part of our camp family.
