|Thank you for your interest in volunteering for Special Love! With less than a half dozen employees, we rely almost exclusively on volunteers to carry out our mission of providing quality programs for children with cancer and their families.
On this page you’ll find general information on how you can help, as well as several special events that need volunteers this summer at the bottom of the page. If at any time you have questions, you may contact us at 888-930-2707 or by sending an email to our Program Director.
**Help Wanted at our gift wrapping booth at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda! Click here to sign-up for a shift to wrap presents (or collect money, if wrapping is not your forte’). Add “SL” to the end of you name when you sign-up so we’ll know to thank you for representing Special Love! Dates are Dec. 7-24 and slots are open all day long. It’s a great way to kick-off the holidays (and earn some karma extra credit points!)
Click on the links below to get more information on the following aspects of volunteering for Special Love:
- Roles and Responsibilities: This is a list of typical roles that volunteers play at camp. If you are new to Special Love, you do not need to worry about being overloaded with duties. Depending on the program, your primary responsibility may be to lead one activity or just be responsible for a small group of campers. If you are a prospective camp volunteer, our application will give you a chance to provide information on hobbies and other skills you might be able to share.
- Volunteer Handbook: While the information contained in our volunteer handbook is constantly being updated, this document will give you some background on volunteering for us.
- Fundraising: Special Love relies exclusively on private donations from organizations and individuals. Nearly half of our annual income is derived from fundraising events, such as golf tournaments, film festivals, and concerts. We are always in need of volunteers to help out with everything from vending to manning an information table. Check out the list of upcoming activities, then e-mail us to let us know if you can help! It is not necessary to fill out a volunteer application to help out at a fundraising event, but feel free to use the application to give us mailing information and other background that might help us match your skills to a specific event.
- Application and Guidelines*: Click for a sample application and guidelines for general volunteering at a Special Love event. Note: if you are interested in the week-long Camp Fantastic or BRASS Camp, those require separate applications, which can be requested by e-mail.
*All Special Love volunteers who either stay overnight at camp or, based on our discretion, have prolonged, direct contact with campers are required to undergo a criminal background check, as well as provide references who can provide written evaluations of the candidate’s past volunteer performance. Applicants will also be asked to sign a voluntary disclosure statement verifying that they have not been tried or convicted of a felony or any crime against children.
